Solar Panels Usage in Schools

Our Mission

GENup’s Solar Panel Usage in Schools Campaign seeks to combat the climate crisis by pushing school districts to invest in clean, renewable solar energy. By shifting away from fossil fuels, we can lower local emission rates, drastically cut school electricity costs, and create healthier learning environments for students.

Why It Matters

Traditional electricity relies heavily on burning fossil fuels, which pollutes local water sources and releases harmful greenhouse gases that trap heat in our atmosphere.

  •  California’s schools spend an estimated $700 million each year on energy expenses—roughly equivalent to what the state’s schools spend total on books and supplies.

  • Over a 20-year period, a single school district solar PV system can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 250,000 tons.

  • Transitioning to solar power shields classrooms from utility budget crises, freeing up valuable financial resources to be reinvested directly into student academics.

Our Twin Initiatives

  1. District-Level Policy Advocacy: Mobilizing chapters to present budget proposals and formal renewable energy resolutions directly to local school boards.

  2. The California School Solar Database: Partnering with top-tier research institutions to build a comprehensive tracker of existing solar school logistics, costs, and contractors across the state to streamline future youth advocacy efforts.

How Your Chapter Can Take Action

  • Push school districts to invest in solar panels to reduce carbon emissions and lower long-term energy costs while creating healthier learning environments.

  • Develop district budget proposals and advocacy plans that highlight financial savings and environmental benefits to accelerate clean energy adoption on K-12 campuses
