LEGISLATION PASSED
SB 98 (Pérez): Co-sponsored by GENup! Also known as the SAFE Act (Signed Sept. 20, 2025), requires K-12 schools, community colleges, and public universities to immediately notify students, staff, and parents if federal immigration enforcement (ICE) is present on campus.
AB 727 (Gonzalez): Requires public schools (grades 7-12) and public higher education institutions to include The Trevor Project's LGBTQ+ suicide hotline and text line on student ID cards starting July 1, 2026. The bill aims to increase accessible, life-saving mental health resources for LGBTQ+ youth.
AB 602 (Haney): Prohibits public colleges and universities from suspending or expelling students who call 911 to seek help during a drug-related overdose.
AB 461 (Ahrens): Decriminalizes school truancy in California by repealing Penal Code Section 270.1, which previously allowed for the prosecution of parents. It removes potential fines of up to $2,000 and up to one year in jail for parents of chronically truant children. The law shifts focus from punishment to providing support, aiming to address the root causes of absenteeism.
SB 510 (Richardson): Requiring that public school pupils receive a complete and accurate education regarding the history, contributions, and, in some contexts, injustices related to African Americans. It relates to amending the Education Code regarding pupil instruction.
AB 1034 (Farías): Directs the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to update teacher preparation standards to include mandatory, basic training in youth mental health. This law aims to equip educators to better recognize, understand, and respond to mental health issues in students aged 6 to 18.
